Welcome to the Department of Food Engineering, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike. It is my joy as the Head of Department, to introduce you to this multidisciplinary field of Applied Physical Sciences which combines the Food and Biological Sciences with different Engineering fields (Bioresources, Chemical and Process Engineering) in the design and development of systems for handling, processing, preservation, storage, distribution and utilization of foods in sustainable manner to ensure production of optimal quality, safe and nutritious products. Food Engineering is among the core engines that drive sustainable food security. Our department is dedicated to providing students with a solid foundation in the field that will enable prospective graduates to be capable of working effectively in the food industry, food research institutes, government, private and international establishments related to food, to produce adequate, safe and nutritious food products. Prospective food engineers would at the end of their training be registered with the Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN) as well as the Nigerian Council of Food Science and Technology (NiCoFoST).
At Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, we strive to create an environment that is conducive for academic excellence, hands-on learning, and the pursuit of innovation. Our programme is designed to impart in students, theoretical and practical skills that empower them to be Creative Design Engineers for systems based on the triangulation function – Process Design, Machinery Design, Plant and equipment Design – for processing, preservation, distribution, storage and marketing of food and agricultural raw materials; to carry out the professional implementation of such designs, and to operate the complex systems that result. Our Faculty members are highly motivated and experienced educators and researchers, who are passionate about mentoring the next generation of engineers.
We are proud of our state-of-the-art and hybrid laboratories, research facilities, and collaborative learning environment, which empower students to engage with the latest procedure and technologies for Food Process Design, Food Machinery Design, Food Plant Design and automation, and much more.
